What properties acid oxides have

Properties of acid oxides are most pronounced in a possibility of use of this group of complex substances for formation of new even more complex substances like acids.

It is required to you

  • The textbook in inorganic chemistry, the sheet of paper, a ball pen, a pencil.

Instruction

1. Read in the textbook about what is represented by oxides. Understanding of bases of formation of acid oxides is necessary for understanding of any given their properties. It is known that acid oxides have such name, because of the fact that in interaction with water they form some acid depending on what oxide is applied. At the same time acid oxides do not interact with acids. Therefore acid oxides, as a rule, are formed by nonmetals, for example, sulfur, chlorine or phosphorus.

2. Pay attention that acid oxides can interact with the main oxides and also with alkalis. As a result salt of the certain acid corresponding to this oxide turns out. This chemical reaction characterizes the most part of properties of acid oxides.

3. Notice that acid oxides also interact with the amphoteric bases and other oxides. At the exit of such reaction salt turns out.

4. Of course, the main feature of acid oxides is their reaction with water. As a result of such reaction the corresponding acid turns out. In such a way, for example, form sulfuric acid.

5. Pay also attention to physical properties of acid oxides. One of the most popular acid oxides is, for example, carbon dioxide. It is known that this substance has an appearance of the colourless gas which does not have any smell. Use of this carbon dioxide for receiving dry ice which represents carbon dioxide in a firm state is known. It is known also that at increase in pressure carbon dioxide turns into liquid. Reaction of carbon dioxide with water also is indicative. As a result of this reaction the coal acid which is weak acid and applied in carbonated drinks to formation of vials of gas is formed.

6. Remember what do detergents of. Actually, this means is result of reaction of acid carbon dioxide with sodium alkali. It is known that this substance is the excellent cleaning means therefore it is called still washing soda.

7. Draw conclusions on chemical and physical properties of acid oxides, having drawn the table with the main properties: reaction with the basis, reaction with water, reaction with acids. For each of properties write the reaction equation with the most characteristic substances.
