Whether the smell has nitrogen

Disputes on the one who was a pioneer of nitrogen are conducted still. In the 17th century approximately at the same time it was succeeded to emit this gas to two researchers — the Scottish doctor D. Rutherford and the British physicist D. Kavendshin. Anyway the final name "nitrogen" to this gas was given by Frenchman L. Lavoisier.

Nitrogen — one of the most widespread substances on the planet. Only the atmosphere it contains a little more than 78%. In the connected state this element meets also in the soil and water. In living organisms it is presented in the form of organic compounds.

Whether has a smell?

In a usual state nitrogen is a non-toxic gas without color, a smell and taste. Weight at N2 is less, than at air and therefore in the atmosphere with height its concentration increases. At a temperature over-195.8 About nitrogen turns into liquid state, and at-209.9 C begins to crystallize.

Liquid nitrogen resembles usual water superficially. That is represents transparent colourless mobile liquid without any smell. In a firm state this gas is similar to snow and also smells of nothing.

Properties of nitrogen

Gaseous nitrogen is almost not soluble in water or other liquids, badly installs heat and electrical equipment. This gas belongs to group inert and in a usual state reacts only with lithium:

  • 6Li+N2 — 2Li3N.

When heating, nitrogen can also react with some other substances with formation of nitrides. In addition, at electric discharge of N2 it is capable to form NO nitrogen oxide.

Inhalation consequences

In spite of the fact that nitrogen is a part of cages in a human body, it is impossible to inhale it long. Being dissolved in fatty tissue, N2 causes severe poisoning, up to a lethal outcome. Also molecules of this gas can make impact on nervous cages and neurons that in turn leads to emergence of problems with trouble and work of heart.

It is possible to get poisoned with nitrogen:

  • at long use of medical respiratory systems;
  • at long immersion on depth, and in particular over 25 m;
  • at non-compliance with rules of work with nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture;
  • during accidents on the productions which are followed by emissions of N2.

Also can lead inhalation of products of combustion to poisoning with nitrogen video and films.

The insidiousness of nitrogen, as well as, for example, carbon monoxide, consists in lack of a smell. Therefore to perform any works connected with use of this gas or substances on its basis costs with observance of all put security measures.
