Why in Ancient Rome the debauchery thrived

In life of each state there are periods of take-off and falling, and the Roman Empire – obvious to that the proof. If attentively to study all history of Rome, it is possible to notice that it is an era of blossoming, conquest of the states and the people and at the same time the period of falling of morals and public customs. If to be fair, the history of Rome not so strongly differs from the history of Greece, Babylon or Carthage where masters always aspired to the power and wealth.

Rome at the time of the early republic

In antique Rome the debauchery was not. There were pretty rigid moral principles. The husband had even no right to kiss the wife in the presence of strangers, especially children. About any debauchery and the speech could not be. In those days patriarchal foundations were a basis of family. The father who was possessing an absolute power and having all rights to punish members of household for the slightest disobedience was the head of the family.

The divorce was unacceptable in the Roman society. Besides, for it could expel from the senate, as it happened to senator Lutsy Anny. But in hundred years the institution of the family became so unpopular that many Romans suggested to repeal laws on family in general. But, fortunately, such decision was not approved by the senate.

What became the reason of such fatal and tragic changes in development of one of the greatest empires of the world

Historians consider that wars with Greeks and invasions of the barbarians besieging Rome are guilty of falling of moral foundations of Romans. Was considered that Greeks were dissolute on the nature and the bad example influenced Romans. Regular wars which Rome waged with other states gave it a huge number of slaves. The slave was considered in society as the person of the lowest grade who did not have any rights. Certainly with it it was possible to do anything. Slaves were forced to render sexual services to the owner and his guests.

In Rome, homosexual communications, especially were very strongly widespread in army. Moreover, it was even considered as norm. In the second century this harmful phenomenon reached such scope that the authorities were forced to resolve legislatively this issue though it did not bring notable results. Influence of Christian church at that time was still very weak, and the army had power and force. As there are always people wishing to lead a dissolute life, carnal pleasures in Rome were officially resolved. Moreover, issued to immoral women so the invited "diploma on rape" which granted it the right to be engaged in prostitution. Cases when representatives of the aristocracy did not shun even juvenile children are known. In times Tiberias there was so an invited establishment "for voluptuousness". In this institution he with success indulged in debauchery with men and women, raped juvenile children, calling them "little small fishes". Certainly, all this led to degradation of "the eternal city". The authorities of Rome could not or did not want to cope with this problem. The Roman historian Guy Sallyusty Crispus wrote that people most of all appreciate idle life and the various benefits. It is possible to notice that even the growing influence of Christianity with its family values and moral foundations could not save the falling Roman giant.
