How to define monotony intervals

How to define monotony intervals

Interval of monotony of function it is possible to call an interval in which function either only increases, or only decreases. A number of certain actions will help to find such ranges for function that quite often it is required in algebraic tasks of this sort.

Instruction

1. The first step in the solution of a task of definition of intervals in which function monotonously increases or decreases, there will be a calculation areasof definitions of this function. For this purpose recognize all values of arguments (values by abscissa axis) for which it is possible to find value of function. Note points in which gaps are observed. Find a function derivative. Having defined expression which represents a derivative, equate it to zero. After that it is necessary to find roots of the turned-out equation. Do not forget about area of permissible values.

2. A point in which function does not exist or in which its derivative is equal to zero represent borders of intervals of monotony. These ranges and also the points dividing them should be included in the table consistently. Find the sign of derivative function in the received intervals. For this purpose substitute in the expression corresponding to a derivative, any argument from an interval. If the result positive, function increases in this range, in the return case — decreases. Results are included in the table.

3. At the line designating function f derivative’ (x), the symbol corresponding to values of arguments registers: "+" — if the derivative is positive, "-" — is negative or "0" – is equal to zero. The next line note monotony of the most initial expression. The arrow corresponds to increase, an arrow up down – to decrease. Note function extremum points. These are points in which the derivative is equal to zero. The extremum can be either a point of a maximum, or a minimum point. If the previous site of function increased, and current decreases, it means a maximum point. In case to this point the function decreased, and now increases - it is a minimum point. Include in the table of value of function in extremum points.
