How to find distance between parallel straight lines

How to find distance between parallel straight lines

At the solution of geometrical tasks sometimes it is required to find distance between parallel straight lines. The same problem often arises also in practical calculations and measurements. To learn to find distance between parallel lines, it is quite enough to consider geometrical methods. Such approach is called abstraction and allows to distract from details, insignificant for the solution of a task.

It is required to you

  • ruler, compasses

Instruction

1. To find distance between parallel straight lines, choose any point on one of them and lower a perpendicular on other (second) straight line. Then measure length of the received piece. Length of the perpendicular connecting two parallel lines will also be distance between these lines.

2. As in practice on the drawing not straight lines, and only their pieces are always presented, choose a point on the first straight line (piece of this straight line) so that the second end of a perpendicular got on a piece of the second straight line.

3. To carry out a perpendicular, take the drawing triangle tool with a right angle. Having chosen a point on the first straight line, apply to it one of the parties of a triangle adjoining a right angle (leg), and combine the second leg with the second straight line. Now, just draw a line along the first leg until it reaches the second straight line.

4. To measure length of the received perpendicular, take compasses. Combine compasses legs with perpendicular points of intersection with straight lines. Now move compasses legs on a measuring ruler.

5. If there are no compasses, then just combine zero division of a measuring ruler with the beginning of a perpendicular and arrange a ruler along it. That division near which the second point of intersection will be located and will be perpendicular length and consequently also in distance between parallel straight lines.
