The United States of America gained independence in 1783, after the victory in the war of independence over Britain. In the next more than two hundred years of the USA considerably increased the territory and by the present moment are the most powerful state of the world.

1. In 1607 the British founded in the New World the first colony - Jamestown in Virginia. In 1620 in America there arrived the first immigrants puritans who signed a Meyflauersky agreement - the first document in which democratic principles of management of new English colonies were reflected. Pioneer settlements of British were united in the Plymouth colony which quickly grew.

2. Within the next 75 years in America there arrived more and more colonists from Great Britain and other countries of Europe. 13 new English colonies in which not only the British, but also Germans and emigrants from some other countries lived were formed. The population of new colonies was very motley concerning religious beliefs.

3. The authorities of England very strictly controlled the American colonies, was unprofitable to them that in America own production developed therefore they watched that it was only favorable to colonists to exchange raw materials for goods from Great Britain.

4. Despite this, in colonies, especially in northern, production after all developed, colonists actively built own fleet and soon began to sell the goods in West Indies. Great Britain began to lose economic control over the colonies. In 1750 in England the law forbidding to colonists to make steel was issued, in 1763 they were forbidden to take out goods from colonies on own vessels. At the same time colonies were assessed with heavy taxes and numerous duties.

5. The population of colonies wanted self-government and independence more and more. An important role in formation of a consensus concerning independence among the population was played by the free press which actively developed in colonies. In 1774 the First Continental Congress during which demands of colonists to the mother country were created and made was convened. The congress demanded recognition by England of ""The declaration of the rights"". In reply the English government demanded from colonists of full submission and blocked the fleet the northwest coast of North America.

6. Colonies held the second Continental Congress on May 10, 1775 on which the Congress was recognized by the general manager the body of colonies uniting colonists for fight against Great Britain. George Washington was appointed the commander-in-chief of troops of colonists.

7. In July, 1776 the Congress adopted the Declaration of independence and proclaimed creation of the new independent state - the United States of America. The war of independence which lasted 8 years began. As a result Great Britain lost the power over the American colonies, and Washington became the first American president.
