17-oh progesterone belongs to group of steroid hormones and is produced in adrenal glands, a placenta, a yellow body, mature follicles and gonads. This hormone is synthesized in an organism of men and women and is a predecessor of cortisol, testosterone and oestradiol. In a female body 17-oh progesterone is responsible for regulation of a menstrual cycle and sexual function, affects ability to conception and incubation of the child. Level of this hormone at women is subject to considerable fluctuations depending on a phase of a menstrual cycle and term of pregnancy. In the period of a premenopauza and a climax the low contents 17-oh progesterone in blood is noted.
Fluctuations of level 17-oh of progesterone in an organism
During the day hormone level in an organism constantly changes: its highest concentration is observed in the mornings, and minimum – at night. At women the level of this hormone rises on the eve of an ovulation, decreases in a follicular phase and reaches the minimum values in an ovulation phase.
If there was a conception and attachment of a germ to a uterus wall, hormone content begins to increase in blood gradually. During pregnancy the placenta also "is connected" to synthesis of this steroid hormone. Level of permissible values 17-oh progesterone depending on pregnancy term: - the first trimester: 3.55-17.03 nmol/l; - the second trimester: 3.55-20 nmol/l; - the third trimester: 3.75-33.33 nmol/l.
What increase in level 17-oh of progesterone threatens with
Normal increase 17-oh progesterone is observed only during pregnancy, in other time it speaks about presence of any pathology. Determine hormone level by a research of plasma or serum of blood by method of the immunoenzymatic analysis. The research is usually appointed in the following cases: - at violation of a menstrual cycle; - at infertility, spontaneous abortion; - at suspicion of tumors of adrenal glands and ovaries; - at a girsutizm (the increased pilosis on men's type). Results of the analysis allow to make the correct diagnosis and to correct the carried-out therapy. Sometimes at patients the lowering of the level 17-oh progesterone is noted – it the state arises at Addison's disease acquired or congenital insufficiency of adrenal glands. At men the level of hormone can decrease because of violation of synthesis of a progersteron that leads to development of false hermaphroditism.
