How to determine coordinates of a point on the map

Often there is a need to transfer data on location of any object to other person. Anyway the data containing geographical coordinates of the place will be the most exact. But before they should be defined.

It is required to you

  • - local map;
  • - measuring instrument.

Instruction

1. Any system of coordinates has to have a reference point and at least two axes – abscissae and ordinates. On Earth abscissa axis is the line of the equator equidistanted from northern and southern poles and halving the globe. The second axis – ordinate – conditionally taken for initial Greenwich meridian. The remoteness to the North or south of the equator and to the East or the West from this meridian in degrees from 0 to 90 and from 0 to 180 respectively will also determine point coordinates.

2. Each card is a display on the scale of the earth's surface to the planes in a mercator projection. For convenience the field of the card is lined on parallels and meridians. Parallels are horizontal lines of the equator. Meridians are put vertically, and on the card they are in turn also parallel each other and to a zero meridian.

3. Be defined in what hemisphere there is an object interesting you – northern or southern, to the East or the West from Greenwich. Depending on the required accuracy decide on card scale. Let's say this northern hemisphere east of a zero meridian.

4. Find the necessary object on the chosen card. Take the measuring instrument and put one leg in the necessary point, and another, having moved apart, finish to below the lying parallel. Transfer the measuring instrument, without forcing down a raster, to the left or right edge of the card.

5. On a coordinate scale put one leg of the measuring instrument on the same parallel. Count the number of minutes or seconds to the place where there was the second needle, and add them to the number designated on a parallel. Write down coordinate, for example: 50 degrees, 35 minutes, 20 seconds of northern latitude.

6. In the same way by means of the measuring instrument record removal of a point from the line of a meridian next at the left. Transfer a raster to top or lower coordinate scales. Add removal to value on a meridian and write down. For example: 96 degrees, 15 minutes, 26 seconds of east longitude. Coordinates are removed.
