How to distinguish genitive and accusative cases

In most cases distinction of forms of a genitive and accusative case does not present any difficulties: it is necessary to pay attention to declensional endings only. If the terminations of both forms coincide, it is necessary to work on the following algorithm.

Instruction

1. If before you an inanimate noun, then you have to ask a question to this word. Nouns in a genitive case answer the question "what?" and are combined with the word "no". Nouns in an accusative case answer the question "what?" and are combined with a word "I see". For example: I put on (what?) a coat – an accusative case, I go without (what?) a coat – a genitive case.

2. If before you the animated noun of a masculine gender of the II inducement, then you have to substitute instead of it any word I of inducement and to look at its termination. For example: hit a boar = hit a fox (the termination – at – an accusative case), was frightened of a boar = was frightened of a fox (the termination – y – a genitive case).

3. If before you the animated noun standing in plural, then it is necessary to replace it with an inanimate noun in the same form. For example: I love people, I love (what?) letters – an accusative case. I love sincerity of people, I love sincerity (what?) letters – a genitive case.
