How to get rid of hydrogen sulfide

How to get rid of hydrogen sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide – colourless gas with very unpleasant smell, is a little heavier than air. Its chemical formula - H2S. This toxic agent which inhalation can cause severe poisoning, up to a lethal outcome. Fortunately, organs of smell of the person feel presence of hydrogen sulfide at air already at concentration which is many times less than dangerous.

Instruction

1. There are two main methods, allowing to peel drinking water from hydrogen sulfide – physical and chemical. If the physical method is used, the equipment is necessary specially: tanks for water, pumps, aerators. It the point is that through the tanks containing water under pressure a large amount of atmospheric air is pumped over. At the same time in this capacity oxygen moves under pressure. As a result poisonous hydrogen sulfide partially disappears, partially is oxidized oxygen.

2. In this way it is possible to remove a considerable part of hydrogen sulfide, but its small amount will remain in water as this substance, though in insignificant degree, dissociates: H2S → HS^− + H^+.

3. Therefore to remove from water practically all hydrogen sulfide in the physical way, it is necessary to lower previously rn waters approximately up to 5.0. That is to acidify a little water. Then dissociation of hydrogen sulfide will happen much more weakly.

4. At a chemical method of removal of hydrogen sulfide at first add special reagents-oxidizers to containers with water, and then filter water through ion-exchange pitches. As oxidizer it is possible to use compounds of chlorine. For example, sodium hypochlorite (advantages – high efficiency, low cost of reagent; shortcomings – water can gain characteristic unpleasant smack) or ozone.

5. The best results on water purification from hydrogen sulfide are achieved if consistently to apply both of these ways – physical and chemical.
