How to receive nitrogen

How to receive nitrogen

Nitrogen is the gas which is not sustaining combustion, it is a part of air which we breathe. Nitrogen, chemically inert element, that is in usual conditions it badly interacts with other substances. In the industry it is received distillation of liquid air, that is divide air into nitrogen and oxygen. But it can be received also in less labor-consuming way.

It is required to you

  • The distilled water, ammonium sulfate, sodium nitrite, sulfuric acid, test tubes, torch, coal, caustic soda.

Instruction

1. Take sulfate of ammonium and dissolve it in the distilled water, solution has to be saturated. Prepare by the same way saturated solution of nitrite of sodium.

2. Pour a little solution of sulfate of ammonium in a test tube and heat it on a spirit torch. Then, on drops add sodium nitrite solution there. In interaction of these two substances there will be a reaction to formation of nitrite of ammonium, and it in turn, decaying from temperature, will emit nitrogen.

3. The received nitrogen will be polluted by impurity therefore, for cleaning, it needs to be passed through solution of sulfuric acid. Close a test tube in which there takes place reaction, a stopper with the tube inserted into it, and lower other end of a tube on a bottom of the second test tube in which sulfuric acid is poured. A part of impurity and moisture will be late sulfuric acid, and nitrogen will come out.

4. Repeatedly passing air through the heated coal, air oxygen, interacting with it, forms carbon dioxide. You receive mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Miss this mix through sodium hydroxide solution (caustic soda), carbon dioxide, interacting with alkali, will remain in solution, and at the exit there will be a nitrogen.
