How to transfer square meters to cubic meters

At the solution of physical tasks often it is necessary to transfer physical quantities from some units of measure to others. As a rule, it is the similar, so-called submultiple and multiple units differing only in a multiplier. For example, grams and kilograms, meters and kilometers. However in practice sometimes it is required to convert pretty not similar units of measure, such, for example, as liters and kilograms or square and cubic meters.

Instruction

1. That to translate square meters in cubic meters, it is necessary to know thickness or height of those objects or the areas for which converting is made. As a rule, a similar transfer is made for some construction materials, rooms and tanks. At the same time cubic meters are used for measurement or calculation of volume, square meters – for representation of the area.

2. For the translation of square meters in cubic increase the area of the basis by height (thickness, depth) measured in meters. If thickness of material (subject) is measured in other units of measure (millimeters, centimeters, decimeters), then at first transfer it to meters.

3. Example. On building it is required to lay 500 square meters of floors boards 2 centimeters thick. Question. How many cubic meters of boards for this purpose will be required? Decision.1. Transfer thickness of boards to meters: 2 (cm) / 100 = 0.02 (m).2. Increase the area of boards by their thickness: 500 (m²) * 0.02 (m) = 10 (m³). Answer. The volume of boards will be 10 m³.

4. Example. The area of the pool is 1000 square meters, and its depth – 2 meters. Question. How many cubic meters of water will be required for full filling of the pool? Decision. Increase the area of the pool by its depth: 1000 (m²) * 2 (m) = 2000 (m³). Answer. Filling of the pool will require two cubic meters of water.

5. Correctly to transfer height (thickness, depth) to meters, use the following ratios: if height is set in kilometers (km), increase it for 1000; if in decimeters (dm) – divide into 10; if in centimeters (cm) – divide into 100; if in millimeters (mm) – divide for 1000; if in microns (micron) – divide into 1000000.

6. If height (thickness, depth) is set in the mixed units of measure, write down this number in the form of decimal fraction. Example. The human height at measurement was 1 meter 88 centimeters. Question. How many the human height is in meters? Decision. As the centimeter is a hundredth part of meter, 1 m 88 cm can be written down as 1 m + 0.88 m that equals: 1.88 m. Answer. Human height – 1.88 meters.
