How to transfer units

How to transfer units

For correct to solve problems, it is necessary to achieve that units of measure of sizes corresponded to a uniform system. Traditionally for the solution of mathematical and physical tasks the international measuring system is used. If sizes are set in other systems, they need to be transferred to international (SI).

It is required to you

  • - tables of multiple and submultiple sizes;
  • - calculator.

Instruction

1. One of the main sizes which are measured in applied sciences — length. Traditionally it was measured in steps, elbows, transitions, versts , etc. Today 1 meter is considered the main unit of length. Submultiple sizes from it — centimeters, millimeters , etc. For example, to transfer centimeters to meters, it is necessary to divide them into 100. If length is measured in kilometers, transfer it to meters, having increased for 1000. For the translation of national units of length use the corresponding coefficients.

2. Time is measured in seconds. Other popular units of measure of time of minute and hours. To translate minutes a seconds, increase them by 60. Time conversion in seconds is made by multiplication by 3600. For example, if time for which there was an event equally 3 hours and 17 minutes then translate it in seconds thus: 3∙3600+17∙60=11820 pages.

3. Speed as derivative size is measured in meters in a second. One more popular unit of measure — kilometers per hour. To transfer speed to m/s, increase it by 1000 and divide into 3600. For example, if the speed of the cyclist is equal to 18 km/h, then this size will be equal in m/s to 18∙1000/3600=5 m/s.

4. The area and volume are measured respectively in m² and m³. When translating observe frequency rate of sizes. For example, to transfer cm³ to m³, divide their quantity not into 100, and on 100³=1000000.

5. Temperature is traditionally taken in degrees Celsius. But in the majority of tasks it needs to be transferred to absolute values (Kelvins). For this purpose to temperature in degrees Celsius, add number 273.

6. Pressure unit of measure in an international system — Pascal. But often in the equipment the unit of measure 1 atmosphere is used. For the translation use a ratio of 1 atm.101000 of Pa.

7. Power in an international system is measured in Watts. One more popular unit of measure , in particular, which is used for characteristic of the automobile engine — horsepower. For the translation of sizes use a ratio 1 horsepower = 735 Watts. For example, if the engine of the car has the power of 86 horsepowers, then  it is equal in Watts 86∙735=63210 Watts or 63.21 kilowatts.
