Who is who: what relatives are

Who is who: what relatives are

Each person, having hardly been born on light, already has relatives. Them at least two – the father and mother. Many people already since the birth have a large number of relatives.

For each degree of relationship there is a certain name. Relationship is blood and not blood, resulting from marriage. The last differently is called property.

Blood relatives

The closest relatives are parents (mother and the father) and their children. The people having the general parents are called brothers and sisters. If the general parent only of one, such brothers and sisters call not full: uterine (general mother) or consanguineous (general father).

Some nuances are brought by second marriage by the parent. The second wife of the father is in relation to his children from first marriage by the stepmother, and the second husband of mother – the stepfather. Children in relation to the stepmother or the stepfather are stepsons and stepdaughters. Parents of the father or mother – the grandfather and the grandma. Parents of the grandfather or the grandma are called the great-grandfather and the great-grandmother, their parents – the great-great-grandfather and praprababky. Children of the son or the daughter are called grandsons, children of grandsons – great-grandsons. It is accepted to call children of the brother or the sister nephews, and brothers and sisters of parents – uncles and aunts. Concerning the people having the general ancestors in the second generation the term "cousin" is used. For example, cousins and sisters are children of brothers and sisters of parents, they have no general parents, but there are general grandfathers and grandmothers. Cousins and sisters of parents are called cousin uncles and aunts, and nephews of cousins and sisters – cousin nephews. Brothers and sisters of the grandfather and the grandmother are called granduncles and grandmothers, and grandsons of brothers and sisters – grandnephews. In the presence of the general ancestors in the third generation the term "three times removed" is likewise used.

Cousins-in-laws

When people marry, members of their families join in new family relations. In some cases their names fit into the system of terms of kindred. For example, the uncle or the aunt it is possible to call the husband of the aunt or the uncle's wife, the nephew – not only the nephew, but also the spouse's nephew. But for most of cousins-in-laws there are separate names. The husband of the daughter is called a son-in-law, and the son's wife – the daughter-in-law or the daughter-in-law. The husband's parents – the father-in-law and the mother-in-law, the wife's parents – the father-in-law and the mother-in-law. The brother of the husband is called a brother-in-law, and his sister – the sister-in-law. The wife's brother – the brother-in-law, the wife's sister – the sister-in-law. The daughter-in-law is called not only the son's wife, but also the wife of the brother or the brother-in-law. However, for the wife of the brother-in-law there is also other designation which can seldom be heard now – yatrov.

Spiritual relationship

Christians have a special relationship generated by "rebirth" of the person – the Sacrament of baptism. Godfathers for new baptized become the godfather and the godmother, and he for them – the godson. For parents of the godson and for each other they become the godfather and the godmother. Also parents in relation to Godfathers of the child are called. Children of the godfather or the godmother – God brothers and the godson's sisters. Once there was also such concept as foster brothers and sisters. Such not blood "relationship" connected the people raised by one woman, but who are not brothers and sisters. Now such feeding is prohibited by the law, therefore, modern children will have no foster brothers and sisters any more.
