Grassy-green color, front part of the head and neck – yellow has the main plumage of budgerigars. On a back part of the head, nape, top of a back and on a sacrum coloring of parrots light green, with dark waviness. When choosing a budgerigar in shop, it is important to be able to distinguish a male from a samochka. And also too little baby birds from adult mature individuals.

1. Young birds are externally similar to females of budgerigars, but plumage has less bright coloring. Color of a chin and a voskovitsa over a beak of baby birds of budgerigars pink. Also unripe baby birds have a black beak whereas adult birdies have a straw-colored beak with a greenish outflow. At the age of three months of voskoviyets of budgerigars gains color according to a sex of a bird. Baby birds of budgerigars accept a final exterior at the age of 9-12 months. At the same time plumage becomes brighter, plumelets gain glossy gloss. Length of an adult bird usually is 17-19 cm or slightly more.

2. For sex determination of a budgerigar look at an outgrowth over a beak – to a voskoviyets. At male adult birdies it has bright blue color, samochka have a colourless or brown voskovitsa. During reproduction of voskoviyets over a beak at females becomes dark brown color.

3. Sometimes the sex of budgerigars is distinguished also on coloring of a chin. At adult males the chin has the same color, as well as a voskovitsa – saturated blue.

4. Also distinctive feature of males of budgerigars is that at them feathers on a front top part of the head ("forehead") have property to fluoresce under the influence of ultraviolet rays. The person can distinguish this luminescence only in the dark, and an eye of parrots can see it and at bright light. In the nature this factor matters when samochka choose the partner for reproduction.
