How to replace com port

At an overload the COM port on the motherboard can burn down. It is optional to change it at the same time - to replace the built-in COM port with the mezzanine board with such port enough or to connect the adapter converter to USB port.

Instruction

1. Make sure that both COM ports are faulty. If only one of them failed, and the device is connected one too, there is a sense simply to use the second. You make switching at the deenergized computer and the device. Check the device and repair that it did not put out of action and new port.

2. If both ports are faulty, turn on the machine and start the CMOS Setup utility which is built in BIOS (holding when loading BIOS the DELETE key or F2, depending on the brand of the motherboard). Pass into Intefrated Peripherals menu item. Find the device RS-232, Serial Port or similar. Switch-off it. Save settings, having clicked F10, then Enter.

3. Deenergize the computer and the device connected to it. Disconnect the last from port.

4. If the motherboard has at least one free slot of the ISA standard, buy so-called MultiKarta. It is equipped with COM-controllers and LPT ports and also disk drives and hard drives. By means of jumpers switch-off on this payment all devices, except that serial port which connector has 9 pins (it is located on the payment, but not on the level connected by a loop). Install a card in the slot and fix.

5. In the presence on the motherboard only of slots of the PCI standard get a modern payment of the Chinese production - the PCI-COM adapter. It has no jumpers, it is rather simple to install it in the slot and to fix.

6. Together with the laptop and also at unwillingness to disassemble the computer, it is possible to use the USB-COM adapter. Connect it to any free USB port (including through an USB hub). In spite of the fact that the USB port allows connection at the switched-on equipment, the adapter of this type cannot be connected and switched-off "on hot", as well as the device serviced by it. Consider that it will not work in DOS.

7. Connect the device to COM port of a board or adapter.

8. Turn on the computer and the device. Wait for loading of OS. In settings of the program servicing the device select new port. Its name depends on OS.
