When to dig out tulips and narcissuses

After blossoming the spring bulbous flowers need good rest that bulbs have restored reserve of nutrients and were prepared for the next season. To help plants, it is necessary to dig out in due time them, and later certain time to land on beds again.

It is required to you

  • - shovel;
  • - secateurs;
  • - knife.

Instruction

1. Observance of special rules agricultural technicians demand tulips. They have to be grown up on soils friable, rich with humus, the bed during the day has to be lit with the sun well. Nutrients in tulips collect in fleshy leaves in the beginning, only after the end of blossoming they pass into bulb therefore it is not necessary to cut off foliage, and at cut of flowers to leave not less than two leaves on plant.

2. That tulips magnificently blossomed, and on bulbs full-fledged children were formed, plants need to be dug out annually, after yellowing of land part of plant. It should be done and to help plant to get rid of diseases and wreckers. Drying and further processing of bulbs in disinfecting solutions before new landing is for this purpose used.

3. The ripened bulb of tulip has yellowish and dairy color of scales, unlike immature white bulb (if to dig out plant too early). At the same time you should not be late with this procedure, otherwise the top scales will decay in the soil, and outplanting will be senseless – the infection will already manage to get over in bulb.

4. There is convenient and simple reception allowing to define readiness of plants for outplanting: it is necessary to reel up peduncle on finger. If it worked well and the small stalk has not broken – it is time to dig out tulips. Usually this time is necessary for the end of June beginning of July, but in different regions the schedules can be moved up in any given party.

5. After outplanting it is necessary to clean bulbs from scales, to sort by the size and quality and to store in cardboard air-permeable box that they have well dried out. Tulips after outplanting dry in the room protected from light at temperature 18-20os within 1-1.5 months. If temperature keeps above these values, the next year the plants will worse blossom.

6. Narcissuses, unlike tulips, can be not dug out in general. The exception is made by situations when the expanded slot demands thinning or change on the new place. At the same time the root system of plants is substituted gradually, narcissuses do not lose decorative effect for many years.

7. The flower child of narcissus is put at the lowered temperatures therefore they blossom better if not to touch plant. After the forced change the narcissuses blossom worse, especially in cases when bulbs long time are stored in the dry place and the root system completely dies off.

8. If nevertheless it is necessary to replace narcissuses, it is necessary to do it when leaves begin to turn yellow and lay down on the earth. As a rule, it occurs in the middle end of June. At the same time it is not necessary to hesitate with change – better to make it at once not to exhaust root system.
