As lines of magnetic field look

Magnetic lines are symbols for the direction in which magnetic field, and for its form works. In usual conditions to make out magnetic lines with the naked eye it is impossible.

Instruction

1. The closer to a magnet, the magnetic field is stronger. "To see" magnetic lines, it is possible to make a simple experiment. Place a magnet under the sheet of paper. From above on paper strew iron shavings. Slightly knock according to paper with a finger and observe how shavings form lines.

2. Around electrical wires on which current flows there is a magnetic field too. On schemes the distance between magnetic lines designates force of magnetic field. Usually on images the magnetic lines represent circles which are located around a magnetic pole or a wire. Than it is less than a distance between lines, that the stronger sex. For example, magnetic field with a force of 1 gauss will be schematically designated by the lines which are from each other at distance of 1 cm. The gauss is a unit of measure of force of magnetic induction.

3. Flow direction of magnetic field is defined by polarity of poles of a magnet. The stream moves from a positive charge of the battery to a negative charge or from the North to the South. In a magnet the stream is directed from the southern end to northern. This direction is schematically designated by arrows.

4. The mother Earth consists of a large amount of iron from within. Therefore she behaves as a huge magnet, generating powerful magnetic field around the surface. This field protects the planet from radiation and wind proceeding from the Sun.

5. Scientists from NASA developed the scheme of a magnetosphere of Earth. This scheme was made on the basis of the researches conducted since the beginning of a space age. Magnetic lines proceed from the southern and northern poles, forming arches around the planet, part of them goes to space in the direction, opposite to the Sun.

6. As well as any magnetic lines, lines of a magnetosphere of Earth are not visible with the naked eye. But they can be found by means of the special sensors defining the movement of charged particles - protons and electrons - around the planet.

7. Many planetaria of the world show the movie "Dynamic Earth: research of the climatic engine of Earth". The image of magnetic lines of Earth is transferred in it by means of computer simulation.

8. The magnetosphere is stuck out on the one side of Earth and decreases on a cone with another. From the planet turned to the Sun it is flattened by solar wind, and from a shady side is extended.

9. Solar wind is very strong stream of the particles arriving at a high speed from the Sun. These particles bear a part of magnetic field of a star to Earth.
