How to calculate speed

Modern life passes in the constant movement: cars, trains, planes, all hurry, somewhere run, and it is often important to calculate the speed of this movement. For calculation of speed there is a formula V=S/t where V is a speed, S – distance, t – time. Let's review an example to acquire an algorithm of actions.

1. It is interesting to learn with what speed you go? Choose a path which metric area you know for sure (at stadium, for example). Note time and take place on it in the usual speed. So, if length of a way of 500 meters (0.5 km), and you passed it in 5 minutes, means divide 500 into 5. It turns out that your speed of 100 m/min. If by bicycle you passed it in 3 minutes, so your speed of 167 m/min. By car in 1 minute, the speed of 500 m/min means.

2. To transfer speed from m/min to m/s, divide speed in m/min into 60 (the number of seconds in a minute). So, it turns out that when walking your speed of 100 m/min / 60 = 1.67 m/s. Bicycle: 167 m/min / 60 = 2.78 m/s. Car: 500 m/min / 60 = 8.33 m/s.

3. For the translation of speed from m/s in km/h – divide speed in m/s for 1000 (the number of meters in 1 kilometer) and increase the received number by 3600 (the number of seconds at 1 o'clock). Thus, it turns out that the speed of walking is 1.67 m/s / 1000*3600 = 6 km/h. Bicycle: 2.78 m/s / 1000*3600 = 10 km/h. Car: 8.33 m/s / 1000*3600 = 30 km/h.

4. For simplification of the procedure of the translation of speed from m/s in km/h use coefficient 3.6 which is applied as follows: speed in m / сек*3.6= speed in km/h. Walking: 1.67 m / сек*3.6 = 6 km/h. Bicycle: 2.78 m / сек*3.6 = 10 km/h. Car: 8.33 m / сек*3.6 = 30 km/h. It is obvious that it is much simpler to remember coefficient 3.6, than all procedure of multiplication division. In that case you will easily transfer speed from one size to another.
