What is epicureanism

Undergoing continuous changes, and being continuously enriched with new concepts, vocabulary of the modern language incorporated a set of terms which origin goes back to the deep past, mentioning antique times. One of such terms - epicureanism.

Epicureanism is the special sort of outlook created owing to the eminence of separate concepts of the household philosophy peculiar to modern society. This outlook the principles putting above all personal comfort and security, a possibility of unconditional satisfaction of sensual desires and instincts are the cornerstone of receiving various pleasures. As a result, epicureanism is associated with tendency to the coddled life, excesses and pleasures turned into vital credo.

Etymologically the term "epicureanism" comes from the name of the philosophical doctrine (epikureizm) created by the Ancient Greek thinker Epicurus. An essence of the doctrine is justification of rationality and naturalness of draft of the person fortunately, a task - finding of ways of disposal of people of sufferings and achievement of the state providing full harmony of the person with itself and the world around. According to the doctrine, it is necessary for happiness only: lack of sufferings corporal, spiritual balance (ataraksiya) and friendship.

Thus, the epikureizm is focused on personal improvement of the individual, defining pleasure as a condition of noble tranquility, putting high ethical standards, harmony of soul and a body in the head. As the scope of desires can be infinite, and means of their achievement are sharply limited to abilities of the specific person and physical laws, one of ways of achievement of happiness Epicurus called the weighed and reasonable refusal of the majority of requirements except for only those from them which dissatisfaction leads to physical or spiritual sufferings. The analysis of epicureanism as outlook and an epikureizm as philosophical doctrine, leads to a conclusion that the term "epicureanism" is generated by extremely distorted interpretation of an essence of the ethical principles preached by Epicurus.
