If it is necessary for you that the server computer managed comparison of the IP addresses and names of other computers of a local area network, configure it for work as the WINS server. As a result users will be able to contact resources of network on names of computers, but not to the IP address. Setup consists of preparation, installation of parameters and assignment of tasks.
Instruction
1. Execute a number of preliminary actions which will allow you to configure the WINS server correctly. Study the basic concepts of this service that further separate parameters were clear to you. Check correctness of setup of the operating system of the computer.
2. For example, if at you it is installed by Windows Server 2003, then all parameters should stand by default. The computer on which the WINS server is configured should possess the static IP address, and volumes of disks should use the NTFS file system. Include a firewall of Windows and activate safety setup wizard.
3. Pass into the Start menu and open the section "Control panel". Select the Administration item, in the opened window start the Control of This Server or Server Setup Wizard command. Go to the Add Or Delete a Role tab. Select the WINS server item from the list and click on Next. There will be a Report of the Selected Parameters page on which look through data on installation of the WINS server. Confirm the specified data, clicking of Next.
4. Wait for the end of setup of components for the WINS server. It should be noted that for installation of WINS service, unlike other Windows services, it is not necessary to enter data of the administrator therefore just quietly wait for completion of work of the installation wizard.
5. After the termination there will be a message in which it will be reported that this computer is the WINS server now. Click on the link "Viewing Data on Setup". It is also possible to find and open manually the file of dens which is located at / Debug/Configure Your Server.log.
6. Close a server setup wizard, having clicked "Is ready". After that update the Windows operating system. Open a setup wizard of safety and check correctness of the specified data. From this point the WINS server is completely ready to work.
7. In addition you can install additional tasks which allow to check correctness of work, to manage records, to perform replication of changes or to manage the server from other networked PCs. For this purpose the master of settings of the server is enough to start and to activate the corresponding function.
