Pantothenic acid, or advantage of B5 vitamin for your health

Pantothenic acid, or advantage of B5 vitamin for your health

Unlike other vitamins of group B, pantothenic acid — B5 vitamin — is known not to everyone though it is impossible to call this vitamin rare: its source are products of a daily diet, habitual for us. Many biochemical processes in our organism would be impossible without pantothenic acid. Therefore it is important to know for what the organism needs B5 vitamin, the consumption rate and sources of this substance.

Description and general characteristic

B5 vitamin belongs to water-soluble vitamins of group B. Substance was discovered in 1933 by Roger Williams, and vitamin received the name from the walnut word pantoten which in translation means everywhere, this substance is in many products of plant and animal origin.

In 6 years the researchers managed to receive B5 vitamin in pure form from a liver of mammals, and in a year the artificial synthesis with formation of calcic salt was carried out it.

In pure form B5 is a viscous, oily substance of yellow color, is well dissolved in water, vinegar and fats, in alcohol is dissolved badly. In medicine calcium pantothenate is used — substance well crystallizes, turning into the white bitter powder which does not have a smell.

Important! B5 vitamin collapses from acid influence (food preservatives) and high temperatures. Therefore in boiled, preserved, stewed, fried, smoked foods a half from initial amount of vitamin does not remain! When freezing, vitamin will collapse on a third.

The main functions and advantage for an organism

B5 vitamin in the connected look is in all living tissues, to its participation there is a synthesis of many hormones and enzymes. However a key problem of pantothenic acid is power generation at the cellular level.

B5 also is a part of different coenzymes (that is catalysts) which start all biochemical reactions in our organism.

Functions of pantothenic acid:

  • regulation of proteinaceous, fat, carbohydrate exchange;
  • regulation of exchange of fatty acids, hemoglobin, amino acids;
  • participation in production of cholesterol;
  • start of recovery processes in an organism;
  • synthesis of hormones of adrenal glands and, as result — anti-inflammatory action;
  • oppression of synthesis of lipoproteins of low density (so-called bad cholesterol);
  • normalization of the increased blood pressure;
  • neutralization and removal from an organism of harmful and toxic compounds, drugs, alcohol, poisons;
  • destruction of fat deposits;
  • participation in education and cell regeneration, cellular covers;
  • participation in development of antibodies;
  • antihistaminic action;
  • regulation of pigmentation of skin and indumentum;
  • simplification of weight of an acne;
  • maintenance of elasticity of skin and prevention of development of wrinkles.

Pantothenic acid is the only vitamin which is absorbed when drawing on skin and does not cause undesirable reactions therefore it is added to many medicinal also by cosmetics for skin.

One of such means is Panthenol.

Vitamin sources

To receive enough useful substance, it is necessary to know what products contain B5 vitamin.

Learn what is a source of such vitamins as vitamin H, D, E, manganese, thiamine, Riboflavinum, ascorbic acid, D3, F, selenium.

Fortunately, pantothenic acid is found in numerous products of both vegetable, and animal origin therefore the person consumes its enough if adheres to the healthy balanced nutrition.

In insignificant quantity of B5 it is made by our intestinal microflora.

Daily requirement and norm

The daily need for substance depends on many factors, but first of all from age — from the birth and the need for pantothenic acid increases to majority.

Also it is necessary to accept in addition B5 if:

  • you physically work hard;
  • strongly you are engaged in gym;
  • you are more than 50 years old;
  • often you have a stress, psychoemotional loadings;
  • you keep to a rigid, low-calorie diet with restriction of many products;
  • you have chronic diseases which exhaust an organism;
  • recently transferred surgical intervention;
  • are pregnant or nurse.

In other cases it is necessary to think over the full-fledged, balanced diet and to use B5 according to below-mentioned norms.

B5 vitamin contains also in such products as a kinoa, honey, green onions, orange, pearl barley, chicory.

Babies and children up to 10 years

For children from the birth and up to 10 years such norms are established:

  • from the birth till 1 year: 2–3 mg;
  • from 1 year to 3 years: 3–4 mg;
  • from 4 to 6 years: 3–4 mg;
  • from 7 to 10 years: 4–5 mg.

Men

The following amount of pantothenic acid in day is recommended to men:

  • at younger teenage age (11–14 years): 4–7 mg;
  • at the advanced teenage age (15–18 years): 4–7 mg;
  • from majority up to 50 years: up to 7 mg.

Women

Girls of 11 years to majority and further are recommended to use from 4 to 7 mg of pantothenic acid. At pregnancy and a lactation the daily requirement can increase to 20 mg, however before raising a dosage, consult with the obstetrician-gynecologist.

Whether you know? At skin diseases pantothenic acid often is one of the main drugs, the dosage in day at the same time cardinally increases and makes up to 1500 mg. And in therapy of an acne, for example, in day it is necessary to use up to 10 g of B5 vitamin (10,000 mg)!

Shortage and surplus of vitamin

Vitamins are necessary to our organism in small concentration — such quantity quite enough to start necessary processes and reactions. However if though it is a little more active agent or less, there can be serious violations in functioning of an organism.

At the same time both the deficiency, and a substance surplus is equally dangerous.

Hypovitaminosis

The shortage of pantothenic acid can be shown during a wearisome diet, physical or psychological activities, at incubation of the kid and many diseases.

It is possible to suspect hypovitaminosis on the following signs:

  1. Constant feeling of fatigue, muscle weakness.
  2. Violation of a psychoemotional state. At first there is insomnia as a result of which work of the central nervous system is broken. At increase in deficiency in B5 this state threatens with an extreme overstrain of nervous system, up to a depression.
  3. Head, muscles pains. Appear because of violation of balance of lactic acid.
  4. The condition of hair, skin, nails worsens up to dermatological diseases.
  5. Violations of work of a GIT: nausea, lack of appetite, indigestion, problems with a chair, inflammatory processes in a stomach.
  6. Painful, burning feelings in legs, reddening of feet.
  7. Hormonal imbalance.
  8. Violations in work of the main bodies: liver, kidneys, heart.
  9. In the started cases there can be severe exhaustion, the termination of growth at children, considerable loss of weight, a blindness.

Important! The comprehensibility of B5 vitamin sharply decreases at simultaneous intake of alcohol, carbonated drinks, preserved foods, some drugs and antibiotics and also contraceptive medicines that it becomes frequent the cause of secondary hypovitaminosis.

As pantothenic acid is present almost at all food, its deficiency develops seldom. But even if you fully eat, the shortage of B5 can arise because of intake of medicines, addictions, diseases (for example, a malabsorption syndrome).

Overdose

The overdose of B5 does not bear any danger to the person and only in rare instances can cause unpleasant symptoms:

  • sleep disorders;
  • nervousness;
  • headaches;
  • nausea;
  • the raised warm rhythm.

Even at single introduction of 0.5 g of pantothenate of calcium for an organism there will come no negative consequences.

Interaction with other substances

It is extremely important to know how B5 interacts with other chemicals, by drawing up the scheme of treatment. Some substances can strengthen effect of pantothenic acid, and — to reduce others or to completely cancel it.

So, such substances have negative impact on B5:

  • diuretic medicines quickly bring pantothenic acid out of an organism;
  • copper reduces active action of B5, and iron and manganese stop its absorption;
  • at reception the COOK B5 vitamin collapses;
  • intake of protease (the substances destroying protein) also destroys B5;
  • alcoholic drinks, soothing medicines, kofeinsoderzhashchy drinks for 50% lower concentration of B5 in an organism;
  • joint intake of B9 and B1 vitamins worsen effect of pantothenic acid;
  • antibiotics break products of B5 in intestines.

However joint reception of B5 and some medicines has intensifying effect on both substances:

  • ascorbic acid and thiamine promote full digestion of vitamin;
  • B5 is capable to weaken side effects of medicines from tuberculosis;
  • at the sufficient level of pantothenic acid there is a full digestion of potassium, B9 and B4, besides substances strengthen action of each other;
  • B5 strengthens effect of medicines for an intestines vermicular movement.

Whether you know? During World War II the food of soldiers and prisoners of war was so poor that they developed violations of brain activity, a partial blindness, a syndrome of burning in feet. For improvement of a state by the patient gave from 30 to 50 mg of vitamins of group B.

Dosage forms of B5 vitamin

B5 can be appointed in the dosage much exceeding standard daily rate in complex therapy of some diseases.

Is issued in two forms:

  1. In medicine B5 vitamin under the name Calcium Pantothenate can be produced in ampoules for parenteral introduction, imposing of compresses, dispersion at diseases of airways. Other names of this medicine: Kaltsipan, Pantoten, Pantotaksin.
  2. B5 vitamin in tablets can be produced as monosubstance, and as a part of vitamin complexes. The most popular vitamin medicines: Vitrum Beauty (the quantity of B5 is equal to 10 mg on 1 tablet), Supradin (11.6 mg on 1 tablet), Elevit Pronatal (10 mg on 1 tablet).

The main indications for purpose of B5 in medicine are such pathologies and states:

  • any forms of neuralgia;
  • diseases of the upper and lower airways;
  • skin diseases, including acne;
  • allergic reactions;
  • toxicoses at pregnancy;
  • mental disorders and depression;
  • alcohol and drug addiction;
  • visual impairments.

At intake of B5 vitamin in tablets in rare instances there can be disorders of digestion, and at parenteral introduction — morbidity in the place of a prick.

Possible harm and contraindications

During prescribing of medicines with pantothenic acid side effects were not observed — medicine is absolutely safe and non-toxic. At single reception of extremely high dose, overdose symptoms which do not demand special treatment are possible.

So, we found out features of B5 vitamin, learned, what is it and why pantothenic acid is so important for normal functioning of our organism. Many people daily use B5 with usual food and do not even guess it.

However if you test a little from the listed symptoms of shortage of B5, it is always possible to make the test and to consult with the doctor of rather additional intake of pantothenic acid.
