At what depth there are sunk ships

The sunk ships are at various depths depending on the place where the vessel went to a bottom. Popular belief that under thickness of water density is so high that the ship cannot fall to the bottom and hangs over it. It's not true – the sunk ships are based in the very bottom.

The myth about depth of the sunk ships

Even some sailors believe in the widespread myth that those vessels which sank in the deepest places of the ocean do not reach a bottom. They claim that pressure at such depths is so huge that the heavy ships cannot fall up to the end – under pressure density of liquid has to increase many times over.

Actually water density even at a huge depth, for example at the bottom of the Mariana hollow, is not much more more than 1000 kilograms per cubic meter whereas steel density – material which is used in shipbuilding – is about 8000 kilograms per cubic meter. Water, as well as any liquid, compresses badly and cannot have such density in such conditions, even under high pressure. In the deepest place of the ocean, water compresses for only 5%. Any ships, even lungs, will always reach a bottom.

Exceptions exist: if in hermetically closed compartments of the vessel there was an air, the ship can hang over a bottom, but it because of effects of completely different laws of physics.

Depth of burial of "Titanic"

The huge British steamship "Titanic" by right can be called the most known among sunken vessels. Its accident which followed a meeting with an iceberg was one of the largest sensations at the beginning of the 20th century. He was wrecked, having passed about two thirds of the way, almost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean depth in this place is huge – the place of bedding of the ship is approximately in 3750 meters from a water surface. It was revealed in 1985. Despite depth, many researches of the steamship by means of special devices were conducted.

Where Bismarck lies

Even more considerable depth takes place where Bismarck, the German warship sank. Three months the ship which was called a shipbuilding masterpiece held on after descent to water while in 1941 it was not attacked by the British vessels. The ship was sunk together with all team – about two thousand people. Its remains were found in 1989 – they are at a depth of 4700 meters.

Schooner in Lake Huron

On the Great Lakes of North America there is one interesting sight – the sunk Canadian schooner in Gurona. It plunged into water in shallow water, it is one of the most superficially sunk ships in the world – she lies down at such small depth that it it is well visible from the coast, water in this lake transparent.

This great place for the beginning divers.

In Gurona and other Great Lakes about seventeen thousand various ships are based: some were found, others were gone. Depth of their immersion fluctuates from several dozen to several hundred meters.
