The poem – the lyrical literary work in a miniature genre which often does not have a plot. In it the momentary mood of the author, the idea, an impression or other short-term phenomenon is reflected, as a rule. The ability to analyze the poem is connected with the general erudition of the reviewer, knowledge in the history and theories of literature.
Instruction
1. The first part of the analysis – introduction. In it specify date of writing the poem, the place of the work in art in general, in creativity of the author in particular.
2. Analysis of an era. Specify dates of life and the death of the author, a political system and moods of the people of that time, outlook of the author, the attitude towards public opinion and to the power. Note in creativity of the author influence of other artists in general and literatures in particular. List the main genres in which the author worked, focus attention on lyrical works. Concretize a subject to the poem.
3. Analyze the structure of the poem: quantity of lines in general and in each stanza, ways of rhyming, accuracy of rhymes, the metric system. Specify use of figures of speech, onomatopoeias, various receptions and technicians: assonation, alliterations, hyperboles, litotes, etc.
4. Compare theoretically removed receptions and the general meaning of the poem: as the author reaches effect of the simple, daily speech or pathos exclamation, gives to statements the hardness or softness, an affirmative or foggy and interrogative shade.
5. Express own opinion on the poem. Tell that you learned new from it what you thought of. Summing up the results, recommend it for reading of a certain audience.
