How to define rigidity of a spring

Springs are a component of a pendant of the car which protect the car not only from roughnesses of the road, but also provide the necessary height of a body over the road that substantially affects controllability of the vehicle, comfort and its loading capacity. As a result of tests for each car the optimum rigidity of springs of a pendant under certain traffic conditions is selected.

Instruction

1. At emergence of "breakdowns" of a pendant the spring is considered too soft. In such situations the motorists become unstable in management. Ideally the spring force has to be equal to the size preventing an excessive list of a body. More rigid springs are demanded by cars which are prepared for races. In different types of races the use of the same car assumes installations of springs with different rigidity. Pay attention when passing any turns to a list of a body which at correctly picked up springs has to be no more than two-three degrees.

2. For a lobby and a rear suspension select springs for rigidity in couples. However not at once it is possible to achieve the desirable height of a pendant because the spring takes seat and at some moment it can "be lost" that is absolutely bad. It happens because of a lack of bearing capacity even at full compression, but with the rigidity providing the necessary height of a pendant. It is defined always easily: between rounds of a spring there has to be a gap less than 4 mm.

3. Choose springs so that at the filled car the gap between rounds of springs was slightly more than 6.5 mm. It is desirable to establish the softest springs though they also will take a list of the car in allowable limits. To apply rigid springs, relying on opinion that they reduce a car list, improving controllability, as a rule, it is incorrect.

4. Check rigidity of a spring by the code of a product or on the put tags (stamping or paint). Also it is possible to define rigidity of springs by a manual press, bathroom scales and a measuring ruler in kilograms on centimeter. On household bathroom scales tree bar (thickness not less than 12 mm) on the area of the bigger area of a face of a spring keeps within, and the spring from above is established. Then the second bar of a tree is put on the top face of a spring and spring length is measured. By means of a press the spring is squeezed up to the certain size (for example, 30 mm) and take readings of scales, calculating thereby rigidity.
