How to receive magnesium sulfate

Sulfate of magnesium represents the average salt consisting of metal ions - magnesium and the acid rest – sulfate ion. Knowledge of ways of receiving sulfate of magnesium can be necessary at the solution of control and independent works or at answers to questions from control and measuring materials (during the Unified State Examination in chemistry). Also the task such can be useful when performing of both laboratory trials, and practical works. Sulfate of magnesium is a soluble salt which can be received in different ways.

It is required to you

  • Support, test tubes, substances: sulfuric acid, magnesium in granules, magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, a magnesium carbonate.

Instruction

1. Metal + acid = salt + gas. Proceeding from the general scheme, for receiving required substance, take a granule of metal of magnesium and lower in a test tube with sulfuric acid. Emergence of bubbles which demonstrate release of gaseous substance – hydrogen will be observed as a result. Magnesium sulfate will be one more product of chemical interaction. Reaction can be described more concrete scheme: Magnesium + sulfuric acid = magnesium sulfate + hydrogen.

2. Metal oxide + acid = salt + water. Take the magnesium oxide representing powdery substance of white color (for experience enough - on a teaspoon tip), lower in a test tube with sulfuric acid (2 ml). Powder will be dissolved, the necessary substance is as a result formed. Scheme of receiving: Magnesium oxide + sulfuric acid = magnesium sulfate + water.

3. Metal hydroxide + acid = salt + water. Place crystal hydroxide of magnesium (on a spoon tip) in a test tube with sulfuric acid (2 ml), the basis will be dissolved and as a result the necessary salt will turn out. Scheme of receiving substance: Magnesium hydroxide + sulfuric acid = magnesium sulfate + water.

4. Salt + acid = other salt + other acid (weak acid decays at once). Take a little (on a teaspoon tip) a carbonate of the magnesium representing insoluble in water, powder of white color and place it in a test tube with sulfuric acid. The effect of "boiling up" will be observed at once. It occurs due to formation of coal acid which instantly decays on water and carbon oxide (IV) or carbon dioxide. Magnesium sulfate will be one more product of reaction. Scheme of reaction: Magnesium carbonate + sulfuric acid = magnesium sulfate + carbon oxide (IV) + water.
