Sumotori – so call in Japanese of the fighter of sumo. Mavas or mavash is the belt of the sumoist in a special way tied around the body. As fight of sumo is martial art, traditional for Japan, this terminology is used around the world.
Mavas in tradition of sumo
Sumo – the ancient traditional martial art practiced in the land of the rising sun still. Each match between fighters passes accompanied by numerous rituals, one of which are the special clothes of fighters – the sumoist belt called mavas. These are the only clothes which are admissible for the fighter.
Some fighters hang on the sagara mavas - it is jewelry which bears decorative function. They mean nothing and don't symbolize.
The special belt – the wide dense fabric ribbon is Mavas. As a rule, use dark matter, but happens that some sumoist act in light mavas. The belt is put on absolutely naked body, it is wound several times around the torso of the fighter and between legs, then is fixed by means of special knot. As mavas is the long film, all attire on the fighter's body reminds thongs really a little. The place of battle of fighters is called the fur-coat. If one of fighters of sumo loses mavas on the fur-coat (for example, the belt will be untied), then it means automatic disqualification. As a rule, the skilled qualified fighters carry special mavas – silk. And here in amateur sport this type of clothes is sometimes put on directly shorts or swimming trunks. There is the separate type of the mavasa – the kesyo-mavasa. It is the belt which is more similar to the apron. It is plentifully decorated with the embroidery and the hanging-down elements. Such mavasa it is used only in the ritual purposes, for fight it is inadmissible.
Other attributes of the sumoist
To issue the hairstyle of the sumoist or to tie mavas, knowledge of the special art which in modern Japan is almost forgotten outside sumo or traditional theater is required.
According to traditions, fighters of sumo grow long hair which before the match are styled in the special hairstyle – the bunch on the top. Fighters from the top divisions do a bit different, complicated hair which not only looks more intricate and beautiful, but also softens blows of the opponent. For example, if the fighter falls the head down, then the shot power the head about the fur-coat with such special bunch will be significantly less.
