1. Propolis represents fragrant natural substance with persistent and pleasant balsam smell. In it the aroma of honey and wax, poplar and birch kidneys is felt. Bees collect the resinous substance which is protective allocation of plants from kidneys, young branches and leaves of a poplar, birch, aspen, a willow, a chestnut, an alder and other trees, transfer on the legs as well as pollen. In a beehive they process it secretion of maxillary glands, adding to the received weight wax in the ratio 2:1 (for 58-60% of vegetable pitch about 25-30% of wax) and flower pollen. Bees use the received mix for puttying of cracks, gluing together of various parts of a beehive, varnishing of its internal walls, strengthening of sot and also for polishing of cells. By means of propolis of a bee narrow an entrance to a beehive if it too wide and it it is difficult to protect and also preparing for a wintering. Bee glue provides water tightness of a beehive, its purity and sterility. For creation of the bactericidal atmosphere in a beehive it is enough only 20-30 g of propolis. It protects the bee family living in big density from viruses, fungi and bacteria. It is noticed that on a body of bees who constantly adjoin to propolis there are no microorganisms.
2. Beekeepers collect propolis, scratching out it from walls of beehives and a framework on which cells are fixed. On average, from one beehive it is possible to receive up to 100 g of substance.
